hamlet of Lavongararum Mr Horatio Igua recalled that his brother, who died in 1997
aged about 80, familiar with photographs of the malagan in the Linden-Museum clai
med that it had been carved by Matsor from Tabor. Matsor died in his 80s just after
the end of World War II (pers.com. Jim Ridges, Kavieng, July 2000).
III.8. An early museum repair, probably dating back to the 1900s, figure no.8. A nail
has been driven at an angle into the left wing to secure a deep crack across the bird.
Wood loses and nail head have been disguised with pigment, probably the lime known
to have been acquired from New Ireland by Graf Linden specifically for restoration
work.
