Worship of the Dead in the Middle Wahgi (New Guinea) 87 range in the Kuno. In about one to three months the novice is graduated and returns to his home-place with a number of amulets, a thorough knowledge of powerful incantations, and the art of producing new charms whenever there is need of such. Now the new magician is armed with a power that friend and foe and even the souls of the dead will respect and which nature will listen to. He can cause sickness, send down a bolt of lightning, make a house collapse. He is an expert at making the charm called kubap, which is generally placed at the land-boundaries or entrances to native homesteads. The souls of enemies, intent on doing harm, seeing the kubap, are afraid and usually turn away. These magicians also function as doctors, in as much as they cure the sick by means of their incantations which drive away the angry soul causing the illness. C. Mediums, the Mouthpieces of the Dead 1. Summoners of the Dead There are in every community a few individuals, male and female, functioning as mediums with the power of summoning the dead and conversing with them 7 . The "summoner of the dead”, as we shall call this particular type of medium, must, of course, be paid for his services. Usually a pig is slaughtered and given to the medium, otherwise, as the natives put it, “No pay, no ghost”. The summoner of the dead is called to the home of the interested party, and while the men, women and children anxiously await the arrival of a departed relative, a gentle knock or a whistle lasting about three seconds is heard. The call of the ghost may be repeated a number of times depending on the number of visitors from the abode of the dead. The medium now converses with the soul and receives a message for the living. During the supposed conversation perfect silence must be observed. Some typical messages would be, for example : “I want you to kill your biggest pig, the grey one with the big black spot on its back. I’ll kill you if you don’t offer this pig to me.” Or again, the message may sound something like the following : “I was poisoned by Mek of Tolu, and you seem not to be concerned about it. You have been eating with Mek, my murderer, and you have been associating with him as if he were your best friend. Don’t you know it was Mek who killed me ? I am very cross with you. From now on you must avoid him as one of your worst enemies. Besides, I demand that you slaughter a fat pig for me. The head and liver you must cook in a different place away from the rest of the pork, and, remember, only the women and children of the family may eat this portion.” Another typical message might sound as follows : “We, the departed, have been helping you build your houses. We have been taking care of your gardens and have done you many other favors, but you do not seem to realize it or you simply don’t care. We have been your
