It was to him that the new king of Benin had to send to announce the death of his predecessor and to seek confirma tion of his own succession. In Benin the king of Ife - the Ooni - is called the Oghene which appears to be the same title as d’Aveiro’s Ogane. However Ife is not to the east of Benin at all, but to the north-west and it has been argued that the Portuguese would not have made such an error in direction (Ryder 1965). In fact it seems most likely that the error was one of translation. They were the first European visitors to Benin so neither side spoke the language of the other. It is little wonder then that a mistake should have been made since, as I. A. Akinjogbin (1967) pointed out, Ife has a cognomen, Ife ondaiye, ibi oju ti into wa - “Ife the creator of the world, from where light comes.” If the Portuguese took the light to be that of the sun, it is easy to understand how the error of direction should have come about. The name of Ife continued to be encountered by the early travellers and on May 15th 1830 one of the Lander brothers recorded the purchase in the Queen’s Market at Old Oyo of “a very curious and singular kind of stone ...
