116 A. Bharati cities — they have to use some Hindi paraphrase, and they do so when they are pressed to do so by proper questioning. It was only among non-English speakers that we found a few — two to be exact — autobiographical statements which incorporated one of our test paradigms ‘when someone’s sister was assaulted’ — and as expected, the term *zabardastV 2 was used; parallelly, one Brahmin in Delhi, who functioned as the domestic purohit (priest) of a banyd (merchant caste) family, reported his father’s death in the expected optimal literary diction ‘jis samay hamare pitdji ka dehant hud’ 4 5 , ‘when the body-end of my venerable father occured’, this being the best possible Sanskritized Hindi diction. When this Brahmin’s banyá employer was stimulated to repeat or recount his Brahmin’s report, the former said as we had expected, “jab pandit ke father ka death hud” 6 . It is conceivable that this banyd would also have used the pandit’s Sanskritized diction had he made his report just after he had heard it from the latter, but I am not at all sure of it. It seems to me that the middle class ‘educated’ urban dweller in Delhi and U. P. avoids the use of Sanskritized terms. This is a time of stylistic transition, and the children of the informants that use the kinship avoidance shift do not use English terms even when they have learned them. There is a pervasive purist trend in schools, which most decidedly has the desired effect on Indian school children, irrespective of the linguistic style in their homes. Middle class parents are aware, and even proud of the fact that their children speak Hindi better than they ever did; better Hindi, however, means Sanskritized Hindi. Now the question came to my mind, whether or not this avoidance- shift has had a precedence in the same milieux. I believe there is such a precedent, or at least an earlier analogue. Of course, the infusion of English vocabulary is relatively new — I would estimate it began around the turn of the century. But in urban middle and upper classes in Northwestern India, say east up to Bañaras, there has long been a quasi-bilingual tendency within the same groups. Men of all ages except during their pre-adolescence when they heard more of the womanfolks’ speech than their fathers’ and uncles’, tended to use Persianized Urdu vocabulary for both sophisticated and critical speech (critical in the sense used in this communication) even where the speech medium was Hindi rather than Urdu. You would hear, and this is by no means an extinct feature today, such highly Arabicized or Persianized words as HntakhdV for ‘death’, when all the surrounding 4 ‘At the time when the body-end of my revered father occurred’ *als sich das Lebensende meines Herrn Voters zutrug'. 5 “When the pandit’s father’s death happened”.
