In memoriam Professor Dr. Ferdinand Fierrmann 
Am 22. April 1974 starb Ferdinand Herrmann, Honorarprofessor für Ethnologie 
und früherer Leiter der völkerkundlichen Sammlungen der J. und E. von Portheim- 
Stiftung. 
Dr. Herrmann war wie wohl kaum ein anderer Museumsleiter mit „seinem Museum“ 
und seiner Stadt verbunden. 1904 in Heidelberg geboren, hat er in seiner Heimatstadt 
auch seine Schul- und Studienzeit verbracht. Er studierte Sprachwissenschaften, Philo 
sophie, Volkskunde und Geographie. 1931 promovierte er mit einer sprachgeschicht- 
lichen Arbeit und wurde noch im gleichen Jahr von Professor Victor Goldschmidt, dem 
Begründer der Portheim-Stiftung, als Assistent angestellt. Abgesehen von einer fünf 
jährigen Unterbrechung während des Krieges hat Dr. Herrmann die Sammlungen bis 
zu seiner Pensionierung 1969 betreut. 
Für seine Schüler, zu denen ich seit 1964 gehörte, hat Dr. Herrmann in bewunderns 
werter Weise die Aufgaben erfüllt, die dem wissenschaftlichen Leiter eines Museums
