Turmeric, Curcuma domestica (or C. longa), is best known in Europe and
mer ica as a condiment. However, the plant has other uses that are prominent
t-U
lr * the
_ social and religious life of people in southern Asia and Oceania where
C - domestica is widely distributed. A detailed consideration of the distribution
0f the cultivated plant and its uses is undertaken here with the purpose of
shedding light on the conditions of its domestication, propagation, and dis
persal.
1. The Turmeric Plant, Curcuma Domestica
C. domestica is a native of southern or southeastern Asia but it is highly
questionable whether a wild form of the plant is known anywhere. The p an
no longer seems to have the power of fruiting, and Burkill considers it to be
a c nltigen (14). This is supported by the genetic evidence, the basic chromosome
n nmber of the genus Curcuma being 21, while that of C. domestica is variously
glVen as 62 and 64 (28). Thus, the plant is a sterile tnploid and the implica ion
ls ^at the species has resulted from continued selection and cultiva ion y
Ve §etative reproduction of some unknown wild ancestor. ... i
The classification and nomenclature of the Curcumas in spite of works

1‘fficult the location of the probable centre of domestication of C. domestica
says : “Though several species of Curcuma are undoubtedly natives o
