Miscellanea
Generalia
Theoretical Speculations on Sacrifice (Th. P. van Baaren). - Sacrifice is a compte*
phenomenon and has four root forms. 1) Sacrifice as a gift which should be followed by a
return gift ; 2) Sacrifice as parting with something of one's own for the benefit of another,
without any direct, essential correlation between renouncing one’s own rights and ac-
quiring some new right ; 3) Sacrifice as the repetition of a primordial event ; 4) Sacrifice as
a form of symbolic sanctification of the world. In this form the sacrifice is often termed
sacrament. Analyzing the sacrificial act in its most complete form six different elements
can be distinguished : 1) the active person, the sacrificer ; 2) the material of the sacrifice,
the offering ; 3) place and time of the sacrifice ; 4) the manner of sacrificing, the sacrificial
method ; 5) the recipient of the sacrifice ; 6) the motive and the intention of the sacrifice-
Man sacrifices to make contact with the deity, to establish or maintain communion wifb
the other world ; to keep the cosmic action of nature going upon its regular course, f°
support cosmic order ; to obtain something from the deity, either in a positive or negatK 6
sense ; whether objects of a material kind such as food or children, or something of a
spiritual nature such as peace of mind, forgiveness of trespasses committed, deliveran ce
from guilt etc. (Numen [Leiden] 11. 1964, pp. 1-12.)
Gryps - Greif - Gryphon (Griffin) (Friedrich Wild).
d. Wiss. Phil.-Hist. Kl. Sitzungsber., 241, 4. 28 pp. Wien 1963.
