Miscellanea
Generalia
Social Anthropology, Meaning and Linguistics (W. H.Whiteley). - During the Con
ference at Bloomington in 1952, for the first time anthropologists and linguists discussed
possible areas of common interest. In 1963 Lévi-Strauss observed that three levels of
investigation had to be distinguished : possible relations between a language and a culture;
between language and culture; and between linguistics as a scientific discipline and
anthropology. It has been recognized for many years that members of a social group may
occupy many different roles in the course of their daily lives. More recently, it has been
emphasized that people also operate varieties of their language, occupying different
linguistic roles, which are also associated with particular social groups and contexts. Most
recent work stresses the inter-relationship of speech and context, but there is a marked
one-sidedness in many studies. By focusing too closely on the individual, the background
loses detail; by focusing on the background, the image of the individual is blurred. Studies
which are generally concerned with meaning would be even more rewarding if linguistic
and sociological work were carried out at the same time and in equal depth. Such a view
may seem utopian in view of the present tendency to award grants for progressively
shorter periods of field work; but it ought surely to be possible for linguists and anthro
pologists to achieve some kind of fruitful co-operation once the basic study of a community
and its language has been achieved. (Man. The Journal of the Royal Anthropological
Institute [London] 1. 1966, pp. 139-157.)
