Ge- v °n den Idealen der Revolution von 1848 durch sein Elternhaus, verspürt Boas schon früh die Neugierde an der Entdeckung und Erforschung neuer Kontinente. Mit Begeisterung liest er Reise- und Expeditionsberichte sowie Erzählungen - sein Lieblingsbuch ist “Robinson Crusoe”. Seinem On kel Jacobi, einem Revolutionär und Kinderarzt, fol gend, verlässt er 1886 Deutschland endgültig, um in Amerika eine einzigartige Karriere zu machen. 1 Am 11. Mai 1936 ziert das Portrait Boas’ das Cover von Time Magazine und nach seinem Tode 1942 gilt er vielen als der Begründer der Amerikani schen Kulturanthropologie. Boas hat auch als öf fentlicher Intellektueller einen maßgeblichen Ein fluss auf die Ausbildung einer “modernen Intel lektuellenschicht”, die konsequent einen antirassis tischen Kulturbegriff zu entwickeln sucht (Baker 2004). Neben der Anerkennung in der intellektuell akademischen Welt genießt Boas bis heute großes Ansehen bei den von ihm “erforschten” Kulturen, die es Boas hoch anrechnen, ihre (zum Teil) ver gangene Kultur dokumentiert und damit für sie wieder “entdeckbar” gemacht zu haben (Kasten 1992b: 100). 1 Das dem Text vorangestellte Zitat stammt aus den Erinne rungen von Emst Boas an seinen Vater (Boas Papers, Amer ican Philosophical Society, Philadelphia). Wir haben dieses Zitat als Titel für unseren Aufsatz gewählt, um deutlich zu machen, dass Boas, obwohl er seit den 80er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts in den USA lebte, großen Wert auf die Beibehaltung “seiner” deutschen Kultur und Sprache legte. Im Hause Boas in New York wurde daher auch konsequent Deutsch gesprochen.
