Erzählungen der Valman
von der Nordküste Neuguineas
August Becker f
Aus dem Nachlaß des Verfassers geordnet, bearbeitet und
herausgegeben von Georg Höltker
Summarium. - From 1907 August Becker SYD spent more than 25 years as a
missionary among the Valman who live on the coast of New Guinea. He died in Australia
in 1959. The Valman speak a language of their own which belongs to the Papuan languages.
They live in four villages, viz. Vokau, Pro, Korogo, and Vrinogol, all of which stretch along
the Leming Coast to the south-east of Aitepe. No major publications on the ethnography of
the Valman exist yet. On the Valman language, however, there have been published several
monographs before World War I. During the years Becker worked as a missionary he had
his catechists note down the vernaculars. The pencilled notes were partly taken down before
1914. Though heavily damaged, a duplicate of the typed copy of the original notes remained
preserved after the Japanese occupation of the Valman villages during World War II. Packed
up in a case it had been hidden in the earth on the island of AH by one of the aborigines.
After 1945 Becker restored the parts damaged and added an interlinear translation. The
57 Valman tales published here present the anthropologist with quite a number of concrete
data on the culture of the Valman, especially on their beliefs and ideas. To the linguist the
texts will make available a rich source of knowledge of the structure and grammar of the Valman
language.
