“Validation” of Game Classification Models
against Sundanese Children’s Games
Joseph Royce
Recreational activities, although of classic concern, have been described
by ethnographers in a rather haphazard fashion. This may have been due to
the lack of a cohesive system of identification and presentation. Recently,
the contributions of Caillois (1961) and Roberts et. al. (1959) provided us
with some models of game classification that show promise. These models
have already been used to show the relationship between types of games and
religious practices, childrearing concepts (Roberts and Sutton-Smith 1962),
environmental conditions and the like (Roberts et al. 1959). Their system has
been the basis of Murdock’s (1967) attempt to map types of games in his
Ethnographic Atlas.
Most comparative studies in this area, however, are dependent on lists
of games which have been produced by scientists, whose major interests
focused on other aspects of the cultures under their scrutiny. Their description
of games, therefore, is likely to have been less thorough and complete as may
have been wished. Dependence on such descriptions, then, could result in the
assignment of certain games to the wrong categories of the theoretical model
by subsequent workers, In turn, this would affect the outcome of the compar
ison of cultures according to the types of games that are played.
Correlations between the incidence of type X games, for instance, and
psychological trait Y, depend on the cumulated judgments of the original
field researcher (who described the games), the designer of the game classifi
cation system who placed certain games in class X, the designer of the psycho
logical test scale of which Y may be one trait, and others. The field researcher,
not knowing about a game classfication system, uses his own judgment as
to what to include in his report, and what to leave out. The game classifier may
discard some games as not fitting his system or purpose (Roberts et al. 1959),
and may never be aware of some already left out by the field researcher. From
the psychological direction the same problems may ensue in regard to classi-
