“Thus, while no definite or precise account of the origins of 
the ‘Sudanic’ civilization can yet be given, there is nevertheless 
enough circumstancial evidence of the various influences at 
work in the Meroitic and immediately post-Meroitic Sudan to 
account for most of the elements in the strange amalgam of 
Egyptian and southwest Asian ideas and influences which were 
to penetrate, with obvious modifications and attenuations, 
through so much of the heart of Africa. 
Essentially the Sudanic state was a parasitic growth fasten 
ing itself upon the economic base of pre-existing agricultural 
societies. To these societies it attributed certain new techniques, 
notably in the field of mining, metallurgy and trade."

sh la fhc Lake Chad basin, the Middle Niger and the Niger bend; and 
pr after A. D. 1000 from the Niger bend to regions south of it and the 
(2 r ^f> er country. The people responsible for this diffusion were the Zagha 
exisf aWa ) w ^° established themselves as a ruling aristocracy in either already 
g0ve ^ kingdoms or on pre-existing agricultural societies which lacked central 
r urnent. They were matrilineals like the Ancient Egyptians and Eastern
