Anthropos 67. 1972
Map 1
The United Nations Trust Territory of New Guinea and neighbouring territories
(Kire region indicated)
inland from Hansa Bay. That extensive terrain was surveyed and chartered from obser
vations made en route, and the stocks which had been seriously afflicted by the head
hunting were successfully pacified'’ (German Report 1912-1913).
The Akukums claim that the report is wrong in attributing head hunting
to them. Referred to as "so-called Kagam people”, they were driven back from
their camps on hills overlooking Hansa Bay, while the neighbouring Birap and
Tung villages remained neutral, fearing German retaliation. Many people were
killed. The defeated survivors were forced to divide into three groups, one of
which retained tho old name Akukum [Kdkdm-yun-say “Akukum old place”).
The other two groups Sefen 1 and Sefen 2 were brought near the coast where
they could be watched. A bridle track was cut leading in as far as Birap.
In 1914, administrative control passed to Australia, but the new regime
had little contact with the people of the Bogia hinterland. Fathers Kirsch-
baum and van Baar (SVD missionaries) sought possible mission sites in 1926
(Holtker 1961; Lands Office Records 1968). Kire men and boys began to go
out seeking work and schooling, so that the visiting anthropologist Father
Georg Holtker SVD was able to obtain data on the Kire people from
labourers at Bogia and pupils at Alexishafen (Holtker 1961) but did not visit
the Kire himself (Holtker 1962, correcting Aufinger 1941).
The brief Japanese occupation 1942-44 was followed by much more
vigorous penetration by Australian government officers. After World War 11
discontent with the Catholic mission led some villages to secede in 1958 and to
introduce a Protestant mission to the area. After some initial friction the two
missions came to accept each other’s presence.
After his pre-war expedition to New Guinea, Holtker published papers
dealing with some aspects of the culture of these people, whom he called Kire-
Puir after their two largest villages (Holtker 1961 and 1962). Kire is a large
