Kankanay Religion (Northern Luzon, Philippines) 73 farther north. In the beginning of the American occupation, Bauko belonged to the subprovince of Lepanto, in the Mountain Province; later on, when parts of the subprovince were transferred to the province of llocos Sur, Bauko became a municipality of the subprovince of Bontok, in the same Mountain Province. Actually (1970) it belonged to the Mountain Province, whose capital is Bontok. The town of Bauko, as is the case with other Kankanay towns and villages, is divided into several sections (Tabláan, the principal one, Lonlón, Batiwtiw, etc.). Each of these sections contains a kind of paved platform, more or less round in shape, and surrounded on three sides by a row of large stones standing u pnght; at the fourth side is annexed a thatched hut, a boys’ dormitory. This platform or court, called at-atóan (or sometimes dap-éy) serves for a kind of meeting place for old men, where they discuss the topics of the day and, in the case of Tabláan, where they make decisions that are binding on all the inhab- dants of the town; hence the name timbuldn (Spanish tribunal) by which it is called occasionally. The pronunciation of the different vowels and consonants, in Kankanay, does not differ from that of other Philippine languages, except in the case of the vowel e. This vowel is pronounced as e in the, except when it bears the accent in an open syllable, in which case it is pronounced as 6 in German. n 18 the ng of bring - between two letters in the body of a word it represents the glottal catch. A peculiarity of the Bauko dialect is the pronunciation of s as h in Aorse. At Bauko the definite article san is han, peso is pého and Tomás is Tomdh. It is very difficult to give a clear-cut picture of Kankanay religion, and I believe the natives themselves would not be able to do so ; they merely follow their religious customs, as they have been transmitted to them by their ances tors, without troubling themselves about a definite pattern or theory. I have a uiassed pages and pages of Kankanay prayers 1 and they are full of intri- Cac ies, and even contradictions are not absent. Besides, as is the case with other Peoples who have no writing and whose texts are transmitted by oral tradition, they contain many gaps, things forgotten irremediably, and also additions that have been inserted now and again in the original text. However, having ly ed for over twenty years with the Bauko Kankanay, besides a sojourn of a bout ten years with another Kankanay group, I shall try to draw a picture, as clear as possible, of their religion as I understand it, and endeavor to disen- intricacies and reconcile contradictions. In general it may be said that Kankanay religion is a mixture of animism, ma nism and nature worship (mostly star worship), with a certain reminiscence ^ a single spirit who stands apart, but has been pushed more or less into the ac kground.
