and cultural affinities including artistic traditions. For many centuries the economy 
of coastal Cameroon had two principal components, fishing in coastal waters 
and trading with Europeans. Prior to European arrival, fishing formed the basis 
of coastal subsistence economies, as it does for many today. European trade in 
the Wouri estuary began in earnest in the seventeenth century. By the beginning 
of the nineteenth century at the latest, the Duala were in place as the intermediaries 
in the trade between Europeans anchored offshore and hinterland groups who 
supplied the export goods. At the time of German annexation in 1884, the Duala 
controlled a trading network that extended from the Wouri estuary inland along 
the numerous river systems of the Cameroon littoral. 1 When the Germans 
organized cocoa, bast, and rubber plantations the Duala, who owned large tracts 1
