The Tetum Folktale as a Sociological, Cosmological, and Logical Model (Timor) David Hicks Contents : 1. Ethnographic Background 2. Texts 3. Conclusions Over the last decade fieldworkers have displayed an increasing apprecia tion of the social and symbolic employment to which prose and poetic texts can be put in the elucidation of the values and structures of those societies among whose members inquiries are made 1 . this renaissance encourages me to offer three exemplars of a certain genre of narrative (that known as the uiknananoik) which constitutes part of the oral literature of the Eastern re turn, an Indonesian people, among whom I conducted research dining the Period 1966-67 2 . 1 Foremost among those who have led the revival of interest in the oral composi tions of illiterate cultures are Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard and Thomas O. Beidelman. between 1955 and 1970 Sir Edward published no fewer than thirty articles and a book ° n the literature of the Azande, while since 1961 Beidelman has treated us to an ever- ex Panding corpus of texts on Kaguru and Ngulu themes. The attention these two scho lars have paid this subject attests to its theoretical and ethnographic value, and one can °nly hope that their example may inspire other fieldworkers to begin systematically compiling a library of texts from their chosen peoples. 2 I thank the State University of New York Research Foundation for providing a G rant-in-Aid which enabled me to compose the present essay.
