(Xue and Ke 1987: 385) 1 “Sister” and “brother” are terms of endearment meaning “sweetheart.” 1. Introduction In this paper we examine definitions and previous studies of hua’er, areas where hua’er is sung, hua’er content, hua’er origins, hua’er meetings, and the structure and rhyme of hua’er. Hua’er is a contested and complex term. Tuo- hy’s (1988) doctoral dissertation is the best lengthy non-Chinese work on hua’er which ambitiously seeks to place hua’er within the framework of “Chinese tradition.” Her definitions of hua’er em brace geography, ethnic groups, performance con text, performers, song content, and musical char acteristics: A folksong genre sung by six ethnic groups primarily in the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai ... (vii). 2 Hua’er song performances combine two equally important aspects of music and words and are usually unaccompanied. They are sung as solos or by groups of people, frequently in a conversational or competitive exchange between two people or two groups of singers. Performances of hua’er combine melodic and textual improvisation with fixed texts, melodies, formulas, and phrases. Their content varies from love songs and historical stories to descriptions of social and political events .... Hua’er also describe local scenes and are sung often in local dialect. While the style and texts of various types of hua’er are different, certain melodic and textual formulas or phrases, often repeated several times in a song or throughout a festival, mark many of the songs as hua’er: phrases like “Flower, ah, leaves” and “Brother’s White Peony.” Certain musical motifs, such as the short glissando from the tonic which marks the end of musical lines in Hezhou hua’er, also point out hua’er ... (141). Chinese scholars are much less specific. Xi (1989: 10) calls it “a kind of mountain song in Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, and parts of Xinjiang mainly focusing on love. It is sung by Han, Hui, Tu (Monguor), Sala (Salar), Dongxiang (Saerte, Tung- hsiang, Santa, Suonapa), Baoan (Bonan, Paoan), and some Yugu (Yogor) and Tibetans in Chinese, in unique patterns.” Zhao (1988: 24) adds: “It is also called shaonian in Qinghai. It is improvised ... and includes lyric and narrative forms. It is divided into two general categories according to its geographical distribution: Taomin and Hehuang hua’er.” Along the Taohe River and the Minshan Moun tains (an area hereafter referred to as Taomin) in Gansu Province, it is traditionally called hua’er while in Hehuang (Huanghe and Huangshui Riv ers) area in the border area of Qinghai-Gansu the term shaonian is also used.
