Kinship Term Avoidance und Substitution in North Indian Middle Class Milieux By A. Bharati This study is partly of a philological nature — philological, I would stress, not linguistic, for this is one of the cases where the oriental ists* misgivings about the application of overtly or covertly anti- meaning” linguistic come to the fore; and it is also one in ethno- linguistics and social psychology. It is hard to say whether or not the peculiar form of shift from one speechform to another in order to avoid the use of any kinship term in the speaker’s language could be connected with the unilingual patterns of kinship term avoidance known and studied in other areas; I feel that the term speech-tabu is often much too strong and I am certain it is quite inapplicable for the speech of caste-Hindus. There is quite a bit of confusion on this matter among Indian anthropolog ists — the fact that some consanguinous and affinal relations must not be addressed by their name no more implies a speech-tabu than the German Privatdozent’s calling, or referring to a senior colleague as ‘Herr Professor* rather than as ‘Tom*, or obversely, of some Lord ship’s referring to his butler as ‘John* rather than as ‘Mr. Simmons’. I believe we should narrow down the use of speech-tabu with refer ence to persons only when the mention of the kinship term, not of the proper name of the person is either inhibited or prohibited; such a case would be the Santhals avoidance of the use of kinship terms in the various categories listed by Nabendu Datta-Majumdar 1 ; it seems that Santhals will not use the kinship terms bahan hare a and ajhmarea i. e. a man and the wife of his younger brother, and a woman and the husband of her younger sister, unless these, terms refer to unrelated persons. Among caste-Hindus, however, the avoir- dance of kinship terms which is the subject of this paper is never rigid; true, the Hindu wife does not call her husband by his name, and she does not usually refer to him as ‘my husband’, at least not in the social and linguistic group on which we are focussing here, i. e. the Hindi speaking banya and kayasth castes in the Delhi area. But every kulin Bengali wife refers to her husband as ‘sami’ (Bengali pronunciation of svami which means ‘husband* among many other things) —- just as all Bengali husbands and wives say ‘tumi* (equ. 1 Prof. Nabendu Datta-Majumder, The Santal — a Study in Culture- Change; pubi.
