New Knowledge The Impact of School upon Traditional Structure of a Mexican village* By Alicja Iwanska “El Nopal” 1 is a little village situated in the cool highlands of Central Mexico * 1 2 , and inhabited by about 500 Mazahua Indians. Their 140 windowless houses made of unpainted clay (adobe) and covered with reddish tile, are distributed evenly over a mild green hill over looking a broad valley divided by a large river. There is a little plaza on the top of the hill. On the one side of the plaza stands a white, tall church surrounded by a solid stone wail. On the other side sits a new broad building with large windows, and colorfully painted walls. This is the new school which the Mazahuas have been building with their own hands for the last three years. To their great satisfaction the school was officially inaugurated (as it is a custom in Mexico, by the Governor of the state) even before the completion of the building. This took place a year ago, and soon after the inauguration the teacher was assigned and classes began. Those two events: inauguration of the school, and assignement of the teacher are constantly talked about by Mazahuas, who modestly emphasize that it was a “real miracle”, but never fail to add later, that, maybe, it was due to their own, persistent desire to provide their children with education, as soon as possible. And, indeed, the fact that El Nopal (which administratively is not a village but a barrio 3 4 belonging to a nearby mestizo 4 village, Las Animas 5 ), got its own school, was rather unusual. This article deals with the very first influences of this new school upon the traditional structure of the village. I was a daily visitor in El Nopal before the school was inaugurated, participated in its in auguration, and lived there for six months after its opening.
