Obituary Morice Vanoverbergh, CICM (1885-1982) On November 2, 1982, the Missionaries of Scheut (Brussels) lost the oldest member of their Congrega tion, Father Morice Vanoverbergh. He ended his earthly life in the Congregation’s central house in Baguio City, Philippines, at the age of 97. It is in a truly intimate manner that the members of the Anthropos Institute wish to join the Scheut Missionaries in mourning the death of this highly distinguished priest who was an equally outstanding anthropologist, and as such closely connected with the Anthropos Institute. Through the initiative of Father Wilhelm Schmidt and with the financial support secured by him, Father Vanoverbergh did his fieldwork among the Negritos of northeastern Luzon in the twenties and again in 1936. During the long period from 1919 until 1972, a good many of Father Vanover- bergh’s writings appeared in Anthropos and its affiliated publications. Moreover, a parti cular friendly relationship developed between him and Father Paul Schebesta because of their common interest in the culture of the foodgatherers. Morice Vanoverbergh was born in Ooigem, West Flanders, Belgium, on September 20, 1885. He was ordained priest in July 1909 and began his work in the Philippines in October of the same year. Apart from some furloughs in Europe and the United States, he spent his entire life in that country, that means altogether 73 years. Father Vanoverbergh’s name will forever remain associated with the ethnic groups of northern Luzon. In his assignments as missionary, parish priest, social worker, and teacher, he became identified with the people in the Ilocos regions (northwestern Luzon) and even more so with those in the mountain regions of northern Luzon. Amidst his numerous duties he still found time for the already mentioned fieldwork among the Negritos of northeastern Luzon. He learned the languages of the people among whom he worked, and published dictionaries and grammar books on Iloko, Lepanto Igorot (Kankanay) and Isneg, as well as lexical lists of various languages. To these studies must be added collections and detailed descriptions of songs, tales, prayers, riddles, and other types of oral literature of these ethnic groups. Due to his scholarly efforts, much of their lore has been saved from total loss (see Gertrudes Ang and Rudolf Rahmann in Philippine Quarterly of Culture and Society [December 1975] dedicated to Father Vanoverbergh on the occasion of his 90th birthday). Three times, or for twenty-three years in all, Father Vanoverbergh was appointed Rector of the Bauko Mission in the Mountain Province. This long stay in one place was particularly fruitful for his work on Lepanto Igorot. This is already indicated in the title of a number of his publications: (songs, prayers, etc.) “ ... in Lepanto Igorot as it is spoken at Bauko”—this qualification “as it is spoken at Bauko,” became a byword among the members of the Anthropos Institute. At this juncture it should be mentioned that I visited Father Vanoverbergh in Bau ko in December 1952. In our long evening conversation he spoke in a congenial way about his work and experiences.
