Its workmanship is fully comparable to that of the fine green-stone yoke found in the Bilbao sunken court. Another bird in a private collection (Fig. 35) is a clearcut example of simultaneous imagery that is so common to these objects. It probably repre sents a turkey, judging by the flesh surrounding the eye, and the beak is rendered in negative form by a perforation of an appropriate shape. The form representing a caruncle above the beak also reads as a human or skeletal nose and mouth, and the bird’s eye doubles as a skeletal eye-socket. Thompson illustrates three or four additional examples of bird effigy hachas from El Baul (1948: Fig. 19a, right, b, left and right, and possibly c, right). Also identified as a bird is an Escuintla specimen (Heye Foundation No. 23/9531). There are two representations of monkey heads, one from El Baul (Thomp son 1948: Fig. 19d, right) and another in the Museo Nacional de Antropologia (No. 2204; Arts Mayas du Guatemala 1968: 229), that have similar prominent brows, eyes, and prognathic jaws. These compare rather closely with three- dimensional representations of monkeys on Bilbao tenoned heads and basins. Two out of three bat effigy hachas in the Fleye Foundation (Fig. 16) and Nottebohm collections (Fig. 36) represent simultaneous images of bats and human skulls. The skull image occupies the center of the field, and the char acteristic bat profile is silhouetted at the edge, with the ear suggesting both a bat ear and the typical deer-tail or leaf-shape above the ear of Cotzumal- huapa skulls. One of these bat effigies bears a faint suggestion of yet a third image, as if the human skull were wearing an animal headdress. As in many other examples of hachas with double representations, the perforations con tribute significantly to the shifting play of images. Besides the above, there are a number of effigies whose animal Identity is unclear. Among them are a possible deer, rodent, and pisote (Thompson 1948: Fig. 19c, e), all from El Baul. The “pisote” is identical with the animal masks worn by both ball players on El Baul Mon. 27. A deer is also possibly re presented on another effigy hacha from El Salvador in the Heye Foundation collection (No 24/3591), and should be compared with representations of deer heads on Bilbao Mons. 14 and 19. A comparison between hacha and tenoned-head effigies disclosed certain marked similarities and differences. Normally, hachas are small and portable, while tenoned heads are monumental in size and too large to be easily carried. Both represent similar anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms, such as wrin kled human faces that may be “old gods”, but certain types appear on one form and not the other, for example, a greater variety of animals are repre sented on hachas than on tenoned heads.
