This old couple probably represents the ancient progenitors, the „parents of the original tribal chiefs who are evidently represented symbolically in the tree roots”. The old man points with a hand of the type T 713b (of Maya writing) towards the tree. The whole ar rangement suggests descent in the maternal line. In the right corner of the scene, in line with the head of Deity A and the tree’s top, we see a nobleman (person 2), seated unterneath a parasol (a Maya emblem of royalty) holding a stylus. „Considering the possi ble function of the object in Person 2’s hand, we are reminded of Maya priests and nobles who customarily kept the sacred books of history and prophecy” (Norman 1976:173). Clearly the Izapa Stela 5 „tree of life” can be regarded as a „birth tree” in the sense of the forementioned examples. 5) Graphemes T 173 and T 606 The Maya equivalent of our „zero” sign, the grapheme T 173, functions in the calendaric part of the monumental inscriptions as sign for the „completion of a time period”. Whereas the numerical use of T 173 (for instance as prefix of the Tun, Uinal and Kin glyphs in the IS-date of Copan Stela B) is best interpreted with Yucatec nuutz’, „comple tion, end”, the T 173 prefix of the „maize” glyph in the „hymn to the emerging elotes” of Copan Stela B is better accounted for by the term utz, „excellent/perfect” (Diitting 1978:54; 1979:38). The Copan Stela B text seems to be a metaphorical poem that praises the birth of the later Copan ruler „New Sun at the Horizon”. He probably was born very close to 9.15.0.0.0, the IS date on Copan Stela B (Pahl 1976:133). The text reads: A1-A8 9.15.0.0.0 4 Ahau 13 Yax A9 173.506P:178, utz.kan.el, „the excellent/perfect desired one emerges” A10 86:561a:23.38, „origin (86 = wi’?) there on high (561:23 = caan-al) of the noble sprout (38 = ...-tox)” All 173.506:178, utz.kan.el, „the excellent/perfect desired one emerges” A12 526:178.38, „on earth (526 = cab) emerges (178 = el) the noble sprout (38)” A13 173:506:178, utz.kan.el, „the excellent/perfect desired one emerges” A14 I:561a:670, hun.caa.pul, „the unique heavenly one is dropped (in birth)”. The „beloved/desired” elotes referred to by the term kan (Tzeltalan/Kanjobalan languages k’an = ask for, request, desire, love) metaphorically address „newborn human offspring”. With respect to glyph A14 note also Yucatec: pul can = llevar o traer embajada. A comparable poetic statement of the birth of a Maya lord is recorded on the Palace- Tablet, Palenque, after the IS-date 9.10.11.17.0 11 Ahau 8 Mac, the birth date of Lord Kan-Xul (II), and its placement in the 819-day count: C4 740.181:126, poc-ah.ih/iy, „washing (at birth) the descendant” D4 115:506:178, wal?.kan.el, ,,it arises/stands up the beloved one”, or to?.kan.el, „the true/legitimate beloved one emerges” / 606:24, haw?.il = h’aw.il, „the one who cries/shouts is seen”? C5 16.1003b: 173, yax.mehen?.utz, „the new son, the excellent one”. I understand affix T 173 and its variant 173[552] now as bivalent grapheme with context-dependent values nuutz', „complete a time period; light a fire” 8 , and utz, „ex cellent, perfect, good”. 8 ) A meaning of 173[552] that is related to the „lighting of fire”, nutz’, is suggested by p.34 of the Aztec Codex Borbonicus (Seler GA II: 762) which depicts the New Fire ceremony of 1507 during the Panquetzaliztli festival. Inside of a house or temple a fire is burning on a hearth-like structure. Four deities surround the fire nourishing it with four long firewood-bundles. The roof and the two walls of the temple are decorated with a white Maltese cross on a black background that strongly resembles the full form of T 173(552]. The face painting surrounding the eyes of the deities consists likewise of a white Maltese cross on a black background.
