Loo Ammohhuuma Conclusion Introduction The Iraqw live on the eastern escarpment of the Rift Valley between the troughs of Lake Eyas and Lake Manyara. To the southwest they share a common border with the Barbaig, to the south with the Masai, and to the north with the Nyaturu. Aya Iraqw or The Land of the Iraqw and the contiguous areas in Northern Tanzania, because of their marked linguistic and ethnic diversity, to say nothing of the striking topo graphical contrasts, have been the focal point for scholarly activity. Descriptions of their eco nomic (Fukui 1969), political (Winter 1966, 1968), social, and religious (Wada, 1969; Toneyama 1970) life have been attempted. Ventures to reconstruct the history of the Iraqw duster, which ethnically comprises of four sub groups, namely, the Gorowa, the Alawa, the Mbugwe, and the Bulungi, are under way. And W. D. Indeed, anthropological and sociological studies have exposed a great deal of the social practices and ritual prohibitions of the Iraqw. However, information of their legal processes and juridical procedures is hard to come by. The following, which is a spillover of data collected in 1976 during field research in oral compositions of the Iraqw, is a preliminary exposition of the procedural details of the rite of reconciliation among the Iraqw. What is presented here is largely a descrip tion, not an interpretation, of how their social relationships are managed and maintained by a consciously upheld, albeit incipient, theory of justice. Commentary and interpretation have been eschewed in hope that a presentation of the dramatized moral and social significance inherent in the symbolic actions of such a rite, will provide useful data and suggest practical and rewarding approaches to scholars of the Iraqw indigenous institutions. Consequently the orations pertaining to the rite are reproduced verbatim, and the illustrative case histories are presented descriptively. 1. Notion of Law and Justice Although, naturally, there are rules which regu late daily activities, personal contact as well as attitude towards property among the Iraqw, their concept of law and justice differs funda mentally from that of the Western oriented societies. Among the Iraqw, justice, in the strict sense of the word, cannot be attained by human beings sitting as judges and magistrates. Elders
