Liminality and Rebirth in the Everyday Life of a Malagasy Diviner Healer 139 Liminality and Rebirth in the Everyday Life of a Malagasy Diviner-Healer GABRIEL LEFEVRE “Magic, therefore, requires a pedigree, a sort of traditional passport in its travel across time. This is supplied by the myth of magic. The manner in which myth en- dows the performance of magic with worth and validity, in which myth blends with the belief in magical efficiency, will be best illustrated by a concrete example.” MALINOWSKI 1948: 118 “Reciter un mythe est un acte religieux qui ne s’accomplit que dans certaines conditions. ” Mauss 1947: 98 Abstract This article presents and briefly analyzes the vocational narrative of a diviner-healer from south-west Madagascar. It was recorded in 2007 by his friend and colleague who was at that time also a research assistant and who then transmitted it to me. The story reveals a struggle between two sources of magico-religious power, ancestral cult and Christianity. Its form appears to be intermediate between dream, myth and reality. The structure of the story follows the classic phases of initiation rituals, including a liminal period followed by social rebirth. It could put into question the classical definition of myth by Levi-Strauss or Eliade. Zusammenfassung In diesem Artikel wird die Berufungserzählung eines Wahrsager-Heilers aus Südwest-Mada- gaskar vorgestellt und analysiert. Sie wurde im Jahr 2007 von seinem Freund und Kollegen aufgezeichnet, der zu dieser Zeit zugleich Forschungsassistent war und sie mir darauf übermittelte. Die Geschichte zeigt einen Kampf zwischen zwei Traditionen der magisch-religiösen Macht: Ahnenkult und Christentum. Die Form der Geschichte bewegt sich real zwischen Traum, Mythos und Realität, der Aufbau der Geschichte hingegen folgt den klassi- schen Phasen der Initiationsrituale, insbesondere einer liminalen Episode und der der sozialen Wiedergeburt. Die klassischen Definitionen des Mythos als etwas Vergangenem von Levi-Strauss oder Eliade werden daher in Frage gestellt. It has been fruitful to note common themes running through the reviews: in short, the ethnog- raphy is “interesting” but the “understanding” of it bad. The main criticism used by the reviewers has been of the reference to Claude Levi-Strauss and Mircea Eliade, arguing that these authors have been widely criticized. In other words, these authors are not fashionable anymore, and should not be cited, In fact, what has been made clear is that this article requires a foreword. There is an astounding case for using the definition of myth as formulated by Eli- ade and Levi-Strauss. No other definition of myth as concise, clear and understandable as theirs could be found in the literature. The testimonial of this healer from southern Madagascar shows a new do- main to which this very classical definition should be extended: everyday life. It is precisely the “inter- esting ethnography” and the “understanding” of if [ present which, although ‚arguably old-fashioned, are the keystones of the article. It only remains to ask what journals concerned with human culture are supposed to do if not give voice to “interesting eth- nography” with alternative—whilst seemingly old- fashioned—understandings” of it?
