A Report from Toronto AssıA MArıA HARWAZINSKI Key Words Canadian First Nations — Anishnawbe — Health Care — Health Insurance — Urban Context — Toronto — Canada The “Anishnawbe Health Care Centre” of the Na- tive Community, Toronto, is based down-town with several branch-offices on Queen Street East, Gerrard Street East and Vaughn Road (Mental Health & Ad- dictions Services). Another health centre is located on Yonge Street down-town: The Toronto Aborigi- nal Care Team which also provides services that are eligible for First Nations, Inuit and Metis people Due to the fact that Aboriginals? in Canada suffeı obviously from a higher percentage of alcohol- anc drug-abuse, so-called mental disorders, malnutri- tion and a generally worse supply of health-care, the Anishnawbe Health Care Centres are well-ac- cepted, fulfilling an important task in cooperation with federal health-care services. The word “Anish- nawbe” derives from the Ojibway-language, has the meaning of “people” and is just another name the Ojibwa use to address themselves. Origins and objectives The Anishnawbe Health Care Centre is a non-profit organization, connected and incorporated to the principle of the “United Way” as a registered char- ity. It was founded in the year 1984, based on a vi- sion of the late Elder, Joe Sylvester. Anishnawbe Health Care Centre started its ef- forts with a diabetes research project which realized ‘that a more comprehensive approach to health care was needed by the Aboriginal community.” The objective of the Anishnawbe Health Care Centre is “to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people down-town Toronto in spirit, mind, emotion and body by providing traditiona. healing within a multi-disciplinary health care model. Freedom of health care choice is paramount for our clients as they define their healing path.” Very important to the Centre is “to recover record and promote traditional Aboriginal practices where possible and appropriate.”® The Centre not only Curare 371(2014)2: 156-160 promotes traditional Aboriginal practices, but also has affirmed them and placed at its core. It com- bines officially recognized scholarly practices alongside with the mentioned ones. In 1989, Anish- nawbe Health Toronto was officially recognized by the Ministry of Health, Ontario, and funded as a community health centre. Since then, Anishnawbe Health Care Centre has grown continuously to meet the various needs of the urban native community of Toronto. This community includes First Nations, In- uit and Metis-people and their families in Toronto. The services are provided by a wide range of professional and dedicated providers, such as: Traditional Healers, Elders and Medicine People. Physicians, Nurses, Chiropractors, Naturopaths, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Services (FASD) Workers, Massage Therapists, Traditional Counsel- lors, Enaadamged Kwe, (7) Circle of Care Workers, a Psychiatrist, Chiropodist and Dentist at different places, among them a Diagnostic Clinic.
