forests: giant bamboos for house building, luscious bamboo shoots for food, 
hollowed-out stems as water containers, slithers as weapons. Well and truly 
have the approaches to the mountains been called “The Bamboo Curtain”. 
Through sheer ability in making use of their natural resources, these 
remarkable peoples have made themselves self-supporting, save only in two 
respects: salt and metal, both of which have to be imported from the outside 
world. 
At some time in the remote past a genius invented the solution to the 
problem of metallurgy by use of the bamboo for smelting, and the bamboo 
piston-pump bellows came into existence: now used from end to end of South- 
East Asia. 
Like most great inventions it is extremely simple. A pair of bamboo 
cylinders enclose two close-fitting headed shafts which lead into a small 
compression chamber, usually of clay, in front of which squats the blacksmith 
with the tools of his craft, his charcoal, and the metal to be forged. 
Many variations have evolved from the original theme. In 1947 I was 
in the Garo Mountains of Central Assam, and was astonished to find in a remote 
village what must surely be the most primitive piston bellows in all Asia. Two
