There, on p. 329, we find several pictures, among them the ship we wish to point out. Just as on the watu weti we see the fish under the keel and also the rudder in the form of a spade. Regarding the protrusions on the sterns and prows of the ships, we might cite the article of Carl Schuster : “On the bronze drums of the Dongson cul ture. . . warriors are represented with certain plumes on their heads. . . and on the sterns and upright features of the boats, in which they navigate” (Article : Head hunting symbolism on the bronze drums. . . etc. Actes du IX e Congrès International, Vienne 1-8 sept. 1952 ; Ed. Vienna 1955, pp. 278 ss.). 4. On the watu weti there is a man in the boat, wearing a headdress protruding backward, much like the panache worn by the man of the Dongson culture (Fig. 5). 5. For the other objects pictured on the watu weti (lance points, arrowheads, knives, etc.) no material is at hand here for comparison. For a report on these objects, as of the whole picture, we await the more scientific inspection of the experts in this matter. The question, when these pictures were carved on the watu weti, we must leave to the archae ologists to determine. But the fact that this rock is quite far from the coast, in a place very difficult of access, would suggest that the sketches were made, not by someone who chanced to land on the seashore, but by the people of that district themselves. These inhabitants then knew the tools exported from the Dongson area. Several figures are conventional, like the boats, the fish under the boat, the spadelike rudder. This might point to the fact that the artist was drawing, not from the boats he saw in the sea, but from a model (a drum ?), he possessed. But the representations are not as conventional as those of the Salayer drum (Heine-Geldern, 1. c. p. 329), which is dated between the second and fourth century A. D. Also the pictured dagger (like the real dagger of Ba- djawa) points to an early time. We may conclude that the inhabitants of Flores (and a fortiori of Celebes) had come into possession of these tools and other materials by (direct or indirect) trade with the Dongson-culture area, before or about the beginning of the Christian Era. Naturally the stone age, especially in the mountains of Flores, took many centuries to die out. But there is no evidence that would prove that the use of metal instruments on Flores was interrupted at some time after the Dongson period, just because a Dongson dagger and some shoe axes have been found on Flores. These instruments would have been in use till the time when iron and steel instruments made their appearance. Then they became part of the family inheritance. . . or were smelted down to make bronze orna ments which are so numerous in the very Lio district where the watu weti lies.
