8 . Conclusion
In this paper , I have discussed south Indian high caste weddings , focusing on the following two major points : 1 . the gender hierarchy between husband and wife ; 2 . the hierarchy between the wife - giver and wife - taker . In discussing these two points , I have demonstrated that the strength of the hierarchy can be studied by comparing several rituals performed during the wedding ceremonies , especially by using the Brahmanic - Vedic wedding ritual as the yardstick of comparison . However , through the study of the wedding ceremonies of various castes , it has also become clear that the role of the maternal uncle is not always uous , although the absence of a clear role for the maternal uncle does not necessarily mean that the wedding ritual as a whole conforms to the Brahmanic mode .
The Brahmanic ideology as expressed during the wedding rituals stresses control over women , especially over their reproductive capacity and sexuality . In this sense , I agree with Berreman who argues that the so - called Sanskritization ( i . e . , the imitation of the manners and customs of the per castes , especially the Brahmans , by the lower castes ) suppresses females . He maintains that females have the least autonomy and equality with men in the Sanskritized segments of Hindu society ( 1993 : 370 ) , and that the lower castes which are striving for upward mobility in the traditional manner suppress women by the imposition of the Sanskritic norm ( 370 ) . This position is backed up by the comparisons I have made of between the various wedding rituals in Tamil Nadu which have been considered in the wider context of kinship and alliance .
Although the Nagarattars are considered to be one of the high castes and live closely with the Brahmans , they are the least Sanskritized pared to other high non - Brahman castes such as the Mudaliyars . The Nagarattars’ gender ideology is based on their kinship , i . e . , their strict caste endogamy , bilateral cross - cousin marriage , and so on , from which they managed to secure bilineal property transfer system . They combine pangaali - based kin organization and that of the pulli ed one in order to support the economic ties as a mercantile caste . A married Nagarattar wife who is addressed as aacchi , which means “elder sister” in their caste dialect , may share decision - making power with her husband in her conjugal relationship . Together with her husband , she is encouraged to increase the wealth she ried on marriage , as the Nagarattars respect the
autonomy of the conjugal household ( Nishimura 1994 ) .
Mercantile activity involves the risk of losing property . In order to avoid this , there are a few techniques employed by merchants to avoid cial risks such as spreading their assets so that all their eggs are not in one basket . In this way , as Bayly suggests , a woman’s fund can act as a reserve fund only to be called into play in an emergency ( 1983 : 402 ) . Endowing women with religious status could also be one of the strategic ways in which they can maintain the ritual prestige of the caste . While the men were engaged in distance trade , the women would look after the household and domestic activities , participating in religious activities in their own right . ism between husband and wife thus might well be based on their rational calculation as merchants , which is based on the principle of exchange on a reciprocal basis , in a way that is similar to the Kammas whose egalitarianism is strongly based on regarding their women as a workforce who can share in the men’s business as equal partners .
For Brahmans , whose assets are based on knowledge , there can be no loss of assets as long as their patriline is secure , which may partially explain why they do not practice bilineal property transfer . Brahman couples are based on a pletely different principle from that of the rattars . Traditionally , Brahman men were landlords and priests , and so had more time to spend at home while wives are busy performing household chores . Under these circumstances , ritual initiation and especially the privilege of chanting mantras are reserved only for sons . An Aiyar Brahman woman in her mid - forties expressed frustration to me when she talked about her experience : she wanted to become initiated and to join the line of chanting the mantras with her father , brothers , and uncles , but was not allowed . “My uncle said , en do not have the right mentality for learning the mantras and rituals every day , because when you grow up and get married you will have much work to do , looking after your babies and doing household chores . How would you keep up the ritual tradition every day ? Pleasing your husband will be your main concern , and you will devote more time to worrying about the choice of sarees than doing rituals . ’ However , my uncle did not say anything about the Brahman boys who do not care to chant mantras at all even though they are entitled to ! ”
