Changes and Developments in the Population of the Nimar District. 61 bodices of strange design. In the Nimar the married women still wear their quaint head-gear, a wooden stick of a cubit’s length, fixed in the hair under the veil. Most of the Balahi women wear a long sheet of thin cloth wrapped around the body, one end passing between the legs and tucked in at the back, while the other end is drawn over the head and shoulders. But gradually the Balahis are adopting the dress of the Rajput women : petticoat and short veil. The Hinduised Korku women wear petticoat and short veil like the Rajput women, but their garments are of cheap but durable material. Their aboriginal sisters usually wear a sheet of cloth around their bodies, tied in the manner of the Balahi attire, but their garments are of coarse hand-woven and unbleached cloth. All women, except the Gond women, wear a bodice. In the Nimar the Gond women have only recently adopted the bodice, and in out-of-the-way jungle villages they still do without it. Though there are only slight differences in the dress of the women of the different Hindu castes, these differences are so typical that from a woman’s dress one can usually make out to which caste she belongs. That proves that since considerable time the fashion of the women in the Nimar has scarcely changed at all. While nowadays high-caste men of the towns do not wear any orna ments or jewels, except perhaps a wrist-watch, some of the wealthy villagers still display ear-rings and armlets of silver or gold. The high-caste women wear in town less but perhaps more expensive ornaments. The low-caste women wear ornaments of similar design but cheaper material. The Narmdiya Brahman women, for instance, do no more fancy the heavy and coarse silver ornaments of the past. They now prefer light gold or silver arm-rings and ear-rings, of superior workmanship. Even their ankle- rings are much lighter than in former times. Also the Gangrade Bania women who in former times carried ornaments weighing as much as ten pounds, prefer now ornaments and jewels of less weight but higher value. The same is true of the Jain women, while the Rajput still like to wear heavy and costly ornaments. The Banjara women are covered on arms and legs with ornaments of a peculiar design; they wear in ears and hair rings and tassels, which in former times were of brass, but now are of silver. The many tiny bells at the hem of their wide petticoats are gradually disappearing. The Balahi women wear the same ornaments as the high-caste women, though usually of cheaper material. While formerly golden nose-rings were reserved to high-caste women, nowadays also Balahi women may wear them if their husbands are rich enough to deck them out with such expensive embellish ments. But generally the Balahi women, as also the women of similar low- castes, wear arm-rings of glass or lac, and ankle-rings of lead. The women folk of the aboriginal tribes are gradually discarding their heavy and coarse iron and brass ornaments and are beginning to adorn themselves with the same ornaments as the Hindu women wear. House-building in towns and marketplaces has much improved, in design as well as in construction.
