Notes on Religion and Ritual among the Dafla Tribes of the Assam Himalayas 23 Sometimes wooden substitutes are put up, and must be of a particular tree, probably, from the account given, a conifer. If, after being thus sworn lr b the prisoner should fall sick, his master is under obligation to sacrifice a pig at the suri to promote his recovery. The presence of megaliths of one form or another is well known among many tribal peoples of this region. But this seems the only instance where they are set up among any of the peoples of this great stretch of the Himalayas. 10. Death Customs and Burial Rites The Daflas have a strong belief in an after-life. After death the spirit goes to some unspecified region below the earth, unless a man is killed in battle, when his spirit goes upwards and stops in the air. Burial of the dead is universal, and takes place as soon as possible a fter death. I chanced to visit a Dafla village in 1947, where a man had died a few hours before. A grave had already been dug near his house, and the body lowered into it. The open grave was surrounded by a palisade of wooden stakes, and a small party of priests and relatives were chanting over it. Closer investigation would have been ill-mannered : but I was later informed that a body is not simply lowered into the grave, but is put in a small side-chamber, a custom existing in one or more parts of the Naga Hills. Among the Kadengs a small oval palisade of stakes is put up over the spot, covered with a roughly-made bamboo roof, and a few possessions of the deceased such as a cloth and a cooking-pot are hung up. But the eastern bagins normally erect a tall pylon-shaped structure, invariably in the case °f a prominent or well-to-do man, and sometimes for humbler people. The bamboo pylon is known as a nylubung, and consists of a series of rough platforms, one above the other : usually four platforms for a woman, and five tor a man. In a small Tagin village I once saw a woman’s grave with the five Platforms of a man, and was told that it was to commemorate a very promi nent personality in the village, who had been accorded the obsequies of a man. For four nights after burial the members of the household of the deceased keep watch in relays at the grave : a fire is lit close at hand and must be kept burning continuously ; it is also the duty of the watchers to keep up a loud conversation, presumably to distract evil spirits from bothering the deceased. Occasionally one of the male kinsfolk may climb onto the platforms °f the nyuiubung. There is a belief that the platforms act as a ladder to help fhe spirit in its passage from the grave : very possibly it climbs up to a new pl a tform each night. On the fifth day after burial the spirit leaves the site in the form of a bird, when it is often seen by relatives and friends. If the deceased has died a normal death the bird descends below ground, and if he has died in battle ^ remains in the air.
