A certain tendency to concentrate on favourite subjects may be regretted by some students, but some of these, like the treatment of the Illyrian question, are original contributions. Omissions in a field of scholarship which has produced scholars like the late Fr Paul Walsh who was quite capable of publishing a serious piece of historical research in a provincial newspaper, are inevitable, but apart from some works of which Pokorny complains were “mir unzugänglich”, they are not serious in regard to Irish studies. These minor faults are easily compensated by the wealth of material on Cornish and Breton, which are often well off the beaten track of many specialist Celtic libraries. During the period covered by this work the most remarkable contribution to Irish, if not to the whole of Celtic studies, have been the researches of Prof. T. F. O’Rahilly who died last year. The portions dealing with his Early Irish History and Mythology (1947) represent the first really critical professional review this book has received. It is to be regretted that Pokorny excused himself from dealing with the mythological aspects of O’Rahilly’s work on the grounds of a forthcoming review by Dumezil. Not only would the work under review have been a more complete study if the mythological theories of O’Rahilly had been dealt with but the promised review by Dumezil never appeared. While O’Rahilly’s theories on the Celtic settlement of Ireland are at least from the chronological viewpoint quite untenable, his original approach and his know ledge of the source material make all his publications worthy of the closest study, and much progress may yet be made on the reaction to his theories, a reaction which was to some extent inhibited by his own sharp and bitter pen. O’Rahilly’s insistence on the predominance of the sun-god in Celtic religion, especially in its Irish form, is possibly correct, but some of his interpretations, projected by him into other branches of Indo-European, are difficult to accept. It is difficult to see how Finn, a benevolent type, could be “ultimately identical” with his perennial opponent Balor who was extremely malevolent. The equating of ancestor, sky and sun- deities are, if valid equations, the result of later Irish developments rather than features inherent in Indo-European religion. The plurality of epithets and names applied to a single deity shown by O’Rahilly (Pokorny counts some 28 sungods) to be common in Gaulish but extremely frequent in Irish combined with a quasi-monotheistic trend through syncretism may perhaps explain the swiftness with which Ireland was converted to Christianity. The seeds of what Kroeber has called “cultural fatigue” were there even if it did not have time to mature to the extent of the classic example of the revolt of Kamehameha II against Hawaiian religion. Surveys of research over a decade or similar period have become increasingly frequent as a result of attempts to bind up the intellectual links broken by the war. The increasing trend of specialization, the growing mass of published material combined with the lack of anything like the Biological Abstracts for the social sciences has produced a permanent need for periodic surveys of the type here carried out by Pisani and Pokorny. This need is nowhere more urgently felt than in the anthropological sciences where so much research is carried on in fields where the frontiers of two or more disciplines overlap. We hope therefore that the publishers of the “Wissenschaftliche Forschungsberichte” will continue to give us periodic surveys at ten or preferably five year intervals, since these are so much more than mere bibliographies. The present volume has a few features which might well be avoided in the future. Unnecessary duplication and overlapping should be avoided, e. g. a reference by Pisani to a particul arly useless review of O’Rahilly looks like deliberate poaching on his colleague’s territory. Most important of all a unified system of bibliographical references should be used. Here each author has separate abbreviations for such common citations as the “Archivio Glottologico Italiano.” The interminable footnotes make for tiresome reading and could be largely avoided by using the American system of citing author, year of publication, (the only two facts really needed to understand and appreciate the argument), and page reference, e. g. Pisani and Pokorny, 1953, in the text with a key at the back which could be combined with the author index. Eóin Macwhite.
