Infancy and Childhood among the Indians of the East Coast of James Bay 479 father, or the oldest man present, who saw to it that the meat therein was cooked separately from the rest of the food. It was this which was passed first to the old man, who took a bit of it and put it in the fire with a short informal prayer for hunting success for the boy. He then took another bit of the meat to eat and put a little of the grease on the boy’s head, as is custom ary at feasts. After which the meat was passed to each of the men present and the little one was given the last bit. The rest of the food was shared out. Then the old man sang and played the drum, while the other men danced around the fireplace in a counter-clockwise direction ; the women danced standing in one place bobbing up and down with their backs to the fire and facing the tent poles, the children dancing among them. When the first walking-out ceremony was for a little girl, she was equipped with a miniature wooden kettle-hook and axe. The goal toward which she walked was a pack of firewood in which there was a small amount of meat. This she brought to the oldest woman, who took the pack from her back and the wood was used to cook the meat. The meat was then given to the oldest man who put a bit in the fire with a short informal prayer that the child may have a long life. Incidentally the woman who interpreted the prayer as given by an old man informant remarked : “It is just like speaking to God. That is how it sounds.” Then the meat for the feast was distributed, the old man eating first and rubbing grease on the girl’s head as for the boy. After the feasting, the singing and the dancing proceeded as described above. At about this stage of walking a little ring of fur was worn by the child around the wrist. As a woman from Fort George described it : “They take a piece of skin from the 'wrist’ of the he-beaver for a little boy and from a she- beaver for the little girl. This is so it will be easy for them to kill beaver when they want it. Papewe (luck) the mother says as she puts it on the child.” A woman from Rupert’s House, who gave me a specimen of a fur bracelet that had been worn by her grandchild, said it was made from the leg of an otter and added : “We take good care of a bracelet like that. The baby wears it and we wouldn’t let it lie about because if we did it would be bad luck for the hunter. The mother sees to it that it would never be thrown away.” Similarly a bird’s head skinned or something of the sort would be sewn on a small child’s coat. 3. Childhood When the child was old enough to begin to use snowshoes, another little ceremony was held when he first wore them, along the lines of that for the first walking-out. During the fall the father collected meat and when the family was ready to move camp again they dressed the child in good clothing - in the days when caribou were plentiful the skin of a young one would have been used to make new clothes for him. The pack that was given him contained cake and tobacco as well as caribou or other “big” meat. His newly made snowshoes were then tied on his feet and he proudly walked carrying a gun or bow and arrow to where the tent had been set up.
