Fire-Shield (624a)" (name of Palenque ord) / 75.1682:570:130, "precious offspring (38), ruler (168a-130) of Palenque (570 — aac)". The 713/757-clause could reflect a ritual on the occasion of a ruler's in- Auguration, probably the performance of the "ritual marriage" between the y augurated king and the goddess to guarantee the continuation of the royal Ineage, With respect to the glyph 89.60b:757, the identification of the prefix as T 89 (tem/ ten?) or T 92 (tu/chu?) is questionable. On the Temple Cross-Tablet, Palenque, both glyph forms, 89.11 or 204:757 and 92.11 or 204:757, occur, apparently without change of meaning. In the Chich'en Itza inscriptions T 92 probably has the value lu, as first suggested by Thompson (1950:57), a reading which I would like to extend to chu, Barthel suggested an extension to tul. The prefixes 74.184 of name glyphs of Palenque lords (Berlin 1968: 140) Were recently given a phonetic interpretation mah.k'ina by Lounsbury (1974: li). Mah k'ina was used as "title of honor and respect for lineage heads and Tulers” 18), This implies a reading k'ina of T 184, which can be understood as Contraction of k'in-na, "sun (k'in) in (its) house (na)". This coincides well with Barthel's (1968:141) interpretation of T 184 as "Symplegaden-Affix", which *Slgnates a cosmic place, the place where the sun enters the underworld. Following Barthel I think T 184 refers to "the sun's decline". 8 As reported by Sahagün (Book 1, Addendum II; Dibble and Anderson 1970: 2), the Aztecs used “declining sun" as metaphorical expression for an “old Man” or an “old woman”: “The sun goeth falling; or I go causing the sun to set — That is to say, I am already an old man; I am already an old woman." The sun hath fallen, or set ... — That is to say, he is already very old; he has grown very old ...". 9) The glyph 602/586:25.178. Lounsbury's translation of the name glyph 74.184.624a of the great Palen- que lord, who is entombed in the Temple of the Inscriptions, as "Lord (74.184 — Mah.kina’) Shield (624a = pacal)” is only partly correct. One of the meanings of the "dotted circle" 18 mo’, “macaw”. The macaw is the "fire-bird", the symbol of the fire, of © Sun's heat (cf. Seler GA IV: 552). The Palenque lord therefore may have ; een named "Fire.Shield'' or "Burning Shield", and not simply "Shield". inde di Lounsbury probably derives this interpretation from a note in Edmonson's Quiché Dict.
