1042 Giulio Costa Antliropos 49. 1954 Asi was killed by a tiger (matcha chika) / Malja was seized by a kind of crocodile (aringga sala) while bathing in a river and held under water until he drowned. From the time of these two ancients (mande gitcham), there has come down from generation to generation the conviction that whoever commits certain crimes incurs the anger of the spirits and will die a violent death. Not only will such a one suffer intensely at the moment of death, but he must also undergo other consequences besides : the corpse cannot be cremated according to the social rite of the people, nor will the dead person get the benefit of any of the ceremonies which help to bring his spirit to the place of rest. Sinners such as these no tribunal dares to punish. They will be punished by their own conscience, and the spirits, especially Saljong and Susime, will also be severe in punishing such transgressors of the most sacred laws and customs of the people. The sins which disturb the harmony of law and order and draw down the anger of the spirits are : Marang watani salrangko manigijani (failure to observe the days of general purification or the ceremonies which regulate such functions). On such occasions the co-operation of all is indispensable, and the neglect of even a single person is enough to nullify the efforts of the population of a whole village to free itself from some incubus. Such an omission may even further enrage the spirit and cause him to wreak indiscriminate vengeance on all the inhabitants. Kegija kimani (marriages within the forbidden degrees of relationship — consanguinity). It is considered a great aberration to marry within one’s own kindred, that is, to marry a person of the same name (machong), even if those concerned live a great distance apart and do not know one another at all. The mere fact of having a common machong is sufficient to regard such persons as brothers and sisters. Silla kimani (marriages within the forbidden degree of affinity). An ordinary man, that is, one who is not a nokrom, may not marry his mother- in-law, nor his wife’s elder sister-in-law, nor the widow of his own younger brother. The woman, on the other hand, cannot marry the widower of her own younger sister. Akring gnanggipa aako peani (cutting down the jungle or grove which is considered the haunt of the spirits). Although the Garos do not erect temples to the spirits, they do believe that the latter fix their abode in some spot near the village so as to be able to see and hear what is said and done there. That particular place is specially set aside for them and is avoided by the people. It is practically considered to be “infested”, and no one may work, fell trees or even cut grass there without arousing the anger of the spirits against the villagers. Kosi-bolgrimni, bol, waa, etc., dene jakalani (cutting and using wood, bamboo, etc., from the Kosi). On the days fixed for certain sacrifices, all the materials for erecting altars, ceremonial fences, etc., must be cut from a place known as the Kosi. But outside of these official days, no one is permitted
