Buchbesprechungen / Book Reviews Vernier, Bernard: La genèse sociale des sentiments: ainés et cadets dans Vile grecque de Karpathos. Editions de l'École des Hautes Etudes en Science Socia les. (Recherches d'Histoire et de Sciences Sociales, 50). Paris, 1991. Karpathos, a long, narrow island in the Dodecanese, experienced Italian as well as Turkish rule before its liberation and accession to Greece after World War II. The present book gives a detailed account of the traditional systems of de scent and inheritance, marriage practices and the significance of names and na ming on the island, as well as the changes brought about in modern times by emigration which, coupled with the introduction of a monetary economy, has brought about severe dowry inflation. The fruit of some twenty years research which started as a study of the interaction between kinship and modes of domi nation, the book has broadened this out to cover also the interaction between social regulation and behaviour, including personal sentiment, making both Bourdieu and Freud pertinent to the argument. Indeed, while appreciating much of the structuralist approach to kinship, Vernier specifically wants to go beyond it, partly by taking descent more fully into account, and partly by avoiding the usual assumption that rules are necessarily obeyed. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is its attempts to examine rules and sentiment in relation to one another. Thus, for example, younger sisters are stereotyped as quarrelsome and shifty, and in the author's experience actually often proved to be so, this being one example where the sociology and psychology can be said to interact. Similarly, Vernier mentions the circularity of the situation in which women are attributed certain qualities, which are seen to arise out of, as well as to justify, the sexual division of labour and the prohibitions women should observe. Even sen timents, however, are seen as being socially generated ultimately, and society is certainly not being reduced to psychology. One interesting piece of other litera ture that Vernier draws on, if only briefly, is the largely neglected work of the late nineteenth-century French sociologist Ferdinand Le Play. The forms of domination discussed by Vernier reside principally within the fa mily, and although he makes the point that kinship cannot be reduced to mere exploitation, he also says that family sentiment is used to conceal the latter. On Karpathos, the axis of domination operates between elder and younger rather than male and female, producing 'a kinship system unique in Europe' (p. 11). As a form of exploitation, this affects above all the canacares (literally, 'something cherished') or larger landowners, who if possible use other labour, whether hired or consisting of younger siblings, to work their land for them. Their customary control of junior kin in their own families is extended to the rest of the village by means of spiritual kinship with shepherd families, from whom distance is maintained by the exclusion of intermarriage.
