The Violence of the Possible 53 quent of social observers who regarded the postwar years as the new time of permanent emergency: hence all the talk about explosions, minefields, and disasters. 11 The great political legacy of World War I was to reveal the treasure chest of resources available to social and political renovators and to clarify just how malleable was the social order. Violence was the founding act of the new beginning that war and technology posed so insistently. It insured the restoration of innovation into a reenchanted future. Although World War I is generally described in terms of immo bility - four long years of irresolution, the war of attrition in the trenches, the scarcities on the homefront - it cannot be fully under stood without taking account of its astonishing mobility: not simply the battles beneath the ocean and above the ground or even the dra matic movements on the eastern front in 1917-18 but also the extraor dinary mobilization of industry, the dramatic rearrangements of the domestic balance of power, the carefully choreographed production of civilian morale, and, mostly, the disruption of millions of private lives. The war generated image after image of extreme “boundary” situa tions, and thereby provided qualifications for unprecedented experi mentation in postliberal political design. The rough politics of the era - the technocratic impulses of organized capitalism, the rise of fascism, the Siberia of Stalinism, the killing ground of Auschwitz - rested on the dizzying assumption that history was malleable and could be re worked and reshaped in hitherto unimagined if unpredictable ways. Jiinger developed his revolutionary politics under the spectacular impression of the world war. The vertiginous experience of the war left an unmistakable mark on his reflections on the creativity of violence, the mobilization of constituents, and the reconfiguration of society. Nonetheless, pace Rohkrâmer, Jünger was not the most consequential revolutionary of his time. Although he acknowledged the new forces of the metropolis, the proletariat, and mechanical and electrical skills, he disdained the mass and popular scale of postwar politics. He returned again and again to highly mobile and isolated command posts, battle ships at sea, for example, when describing the total society he saw tak ing shape and did not conceptualize in detail the reformulation of so ciety in the conditions of danger. This was the dubious achievement of the National Socialists, who, for all their tactical compromises in elec tions, went to remarkable lengths to configure society in dynamic, ra cial terms.
