The Social Classification of Domestic Space 661 the Australian case study it was uncommon for all but two households in the newer sample of houses to have a roast dinner on Sundays. (These families had both emigrated from England within the last four years.) About half (13 of 30) respondents in the sample of older houses, said they often had a roast dinner on Sundays. These findings contrast with those of the English case study; it was said by (56 of 60) respondents that they have a roast joint (with Yorkshire pudding) on Sundays between 13.00-15.00 hours b For all but three of these respondents this meal was said to be “the main meal of the week.” Apart from the roast dinner on Sunday, the other significant difference gleaned from the two studies is the distinction between meals eaten during the week and those on weekends. In the English study, a common dictum is that dinner, the main meal of the day, is eaten by the head of the household (and perhaps all the family) at home. In those households in which the respondent did not work in the morning, dinner was commonly eaten between 12.00-13.00 hours. The husband (and sometimes the children) came home from school for lunch especially if this was necessary 1 2 . In the younger families it was more common for “dinner to be eaten in the evening,” when all the family were home together. In the Australian study, a universal norm was the eating of the main meal of the day in the evening both during the week and on weekends (except for those who had a roast dinner for lunch on Sundays). Those households in the English ethnographic study who had their main meal (“dinner”), between 12.00-13.00 hours usually had four distinct meals rather than three. It was common for them to have “tea” (uncooked or “some thing on toast”) between 16.30-17.30 hours, and this would be followed by supper between 21.00-22.00 hours. “Supper” was usually “a snack” - cheese and biscuits or sandwiches and cakes, with tea or coffee — and it was always eaten in the living room watching television; when visitors were present many of the younger households would have a special supper of “Chinese Take- Away.” There was no comparable formal eating pattern revealed in the Au stralian study. In the English ethnographic study it was very common for children to eat a hot school lunch, rather than eat at home or take a home-made lunch to school. In the Australian ethnographic study it was almost universal for school children to take a home-prepared lunch to school each day. The findings from each ethnographic study have suggested that there are not significant differences in the eating of breakfasts, apart from weekends, and that there has been a shift in eating patterns in the last twenty (20) years. The custom of eating a cooked breakfast was uncommon in the English samples, apart from weekends. More noticeable, however, were the number of house holds in which no breakfasts were eaten during the week, although this was more common in the younger age group. There was a large number of respon 1 xhe exceptions were a respondent who was married to a Maroccan, and an elderly woman who used chicken as a meat substitute, because it was cheaper meat. 2 headmistress at the Infants School did not permit children to stay at school all day during their first year.
