714 Aloys Kaspru§, S. Y. D., [37-40, 1942-45] and stories of the Saker people nothing has been published of this language. This just mentioned material on the Sakers’ mythology is perhaps lost because of the Japanese invasion. As Sister Alexis had some knowledge of the Megiar language too, I submitted the Saker as well as Megiar vocabularies and phraseologies to her for a check up, which she kindly did. However, I never saw any notes dealing with the Megiar tongue, although I had heard of the existence of some scattered notes dating from the time of the late Rev. Fr. Weyer, S.V. D., who had lost all his ethno graphical and linguistical notes when his canoe capsized. As the Megiar and Matukar tribes have a perfect command of the Saker as well as of their own languages they received their instructions in the Saker language only and their own languages came into disuse in the school, however, not in their daily village life. A vocabulary of 5000 words and a catechism in the A’é 2 dialect was composed by Rev. Fr. William Ross, S. V. D. Of the other languages no written notes existed before I sent my material in more than 11 years ago, and as far as I know nothing has been published of these languages of the Mugil district. 1. Geographical Notes. The coastal part of these linguistical groups comprises the Melanesian tribes but only parts of the non-Melanesian Saker and Garus tribes. The whole district, however, is bounded by the Gelagi River in the northwest and the rugged mountains in the west. Along the coast it is reasonably accessible at many places, broadening out for plantations and gardens. At other places, however, a belt of coral hills rises rapidly from moderate elevations near the coast to heights of 100 to 400 feet. Coral formations on high slopes 3 to 4 miles into the interior indicate geological oscillations of the whole area in former periods. Separated by mountain streams, another higher chain traverses the hinterland of these tribes and reaches altitudes of more than 4000 feet on the third and fourth ridges. These chains form the Adalbert Range and fall away on the far side into the Ramu Valley along their whole length. The summits of the Adalbert Range contrast strongly with the lower coral formations of the coast all of which are habitable and populated, having coconut groves up to their highest hill tops. The vegetation on all the hills and mountains is luxuriant and is beau tiful in appearance. But the hill tops above 2000 feet, being often enshrouded 2 A’e or Rempi dialect : a vocabulary of the Rempi language consisting of 5000 words is mentioned in the “Official Handbook of the Territory of New Guinea”. Canberra 1937, p. 464. The material for this vocabulary has been collected by the mis sionaries S. V. D. and composed by Rev. W. Ross, S. V. D., However, it was lost and was not available for the present study. I availed myself of a reliable informant of this area who knew the Em and Ate dialects as well.
