Any younger hunters who are present are sent away (the Kaonde), or the removal of the nerve takes place in an isolated spot (the Wemba, Tonga, Sena, the "Zambesi area” 51 ). The cavity left in the tusk is quickly closed up with a bunch of leaves which has been prepared in advance, as otherwise many would be afflicted with bilhar- zioma (the Tonga, Sena), and the nerve is buried in a spot which is then specially marked (the Ganda) or under the site of the camp-fire (the Lumbu). It may also, however, be used in medicines for children (the Wemba) 52 . According to the Ganda, the elephant’s spirit is attached to the nerve, and if a hunter stepped over the grave he would be killed by an elephant when he went hunting. If an elephant’s or hippopotamus’ tusk is carried over a field in Loango and among the Kikuyu this would injure the crops and the last-mentioned must therefore ward off the damage 53 . The Gabon-Pygmies and the Twa on the shores of Take Kiwu put a bridal wreath on the tusks but do not appear to attach any importance to the nerve 54 . 6. The penis and the ears The cutting off of a slain animal’s penis or ears is practised, to judge from the material, in connection with the hunting of big game, especially the elephant, hippopotamus and rhinoceros. The Ndassa burn the elephant’s penis together with the tip of the trunk, hide from the knees and head, and excrement, and put the ashes in a leather bag containing similar remains from the big male elephants that have been killed in former hunts and whose help is implored before a hunt 55 . The Gabon-Pygmies and the Twa on the shores of Lake Kiwu, P. Schumacher is referring to the more easterly groups, bury the penis in the woods, in which connection, among the first-mentioned, the chief expresses the hope that the elephant may now rest in peace for ever, and not avenge himself upon the Pygmies, and among the last-mentioned, again, his assurance that the elephant is now deprived of his strength and is no longer able to injure anyone 56 . With this should be compared the circumstance that the Kamba, when they have killed a female elephant, cut off and bury the dugs, since they "resemble the breasts of a woman” 57 ; the motive adduced can scarcely, however, be the original one. 50 C.
