!Kung Bushman Kinship 699 to guarantee to the young couple their independence as a nuclear family within the extended core. Several things indicate that among the !Kung this variant of a widespread phenomenon is consciously kept on the symbolic level. Avoidance relations are never allowed to become an impediment in economic cooperation (1959:340; cf. also 1961: 237, 239, 244). Even between parents and children-in-law the avoidance rule is gradually eased when the couple has its own children. Perhaps, even the rule of temporary uxorilocal residence as such has to be understood as predominantly symbolic behavior. At least, this Would explain its rather ambiguous character. The reasons given for the institution of bride service are economical; “The !Kung talk about it constantly and explain bride-service in terms of meat. ‘Our daughter’s husband must give us meat. We need him to hunt for us. He must feed his bride’ they reiterate” (1960; 338). But one has to see also the other side of the medal. The extended core looses experienced young hunters and gets in exchange people who might have been good hunters in their band but have now to start from scratch to master the most essential skill of hunting in the environment the !Kung live in: knowledge of the territory. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the long separation of a man from the hunting team he has grown up with forces him to develop as an independent and responsible father of a household. This is realized by the !Kung themselves: “They say also, but not with so much emphasis, that they want to see the young man grow to maturity and want to make sure that he is able and responsible and that he will be kind to their daughter” (1960: 338). 2. Co-parents-in-law. Results of componential analysis combined with joking/avoidance arrangements and marriage rules suggest the co-parents-in-law category as a “model” of affinal relationship (cf. p. 688) or even as a point where concepts of consanguineuos and affinal relations converge (cf. p. 697). We can now add some further data. Co-parents-in-law are, as centers of their extended cores, essential points of orientation for a young family during the subsequent phases °f uxorilocal and virilocal residence. Since they will usually not be coresidents fn the same band, the joking relation between them is an expression for their common interest in the wellbeing of their married children and especially in their grandchildren who will eventually be named for their grandparents. Furthermore, whereas the sibling relation is the most important bond between extended cores within a band, the co-parent-in-law relation is the most impor tant tie between cores beyond the limits of a band, i. e. the most important cleans of band-transcending integration in !Kung society. 3- Affinals in the sibling category.
