Analecta et Additamenta 599 berate on the request and then to designate those who were to be dispatched to fetch the megalith if approval was granted. This work team received cooked pork from a pig butchered especially for this gathering to eat on the way to the quarry (famera nidano “eating pork on the way to the quarry”). A sledge in the form of a boat, constructed of tree trunks and lashings of rattan, was used as a carrier for the megalith. Transporting the megalith was accomplished in a religiously prescribed manner; an auspicious time for beginning the work of dragging the stone was at full moon 4 . A series of modest pork dinners were presented to those who helped transport the stone and to those who carved it into the desired shape, until the project was com pleted. The host for these meals was the sibaja, the sponsor’s mother’s brother, and the meals were termed falolocha mbatu "to eat on the stone” (cf. Lamster 1928: 5; W. F. Schroder, 1933: 86). After this series of meals had been sponsored, the larger feast, falolocha mbatu, followed; this was capped by the dedicating ceremonial banquet so’i mbatu. The following distributions of porkers were made at this time (all porkers had to be at least four alisi large). The shares were: a) Fanoro mbatu “to those who hauled the stone”: 1 pig; b) Ozimamanoro “to those who have already given a ‘stone feast’”: 1 pig; c) Baziulu “to the nobles”: 1 pig; d) O mbambato “to the village dignitary and his family”: 2 to 3 pigs; e) Be’eld mbatu “to the priestess or priest who solemnized the ceremonies”: 1 pig; /) Fondlako mbatu “to the villagers who helped drag the stones used as supports for the megalith”: 1 pig. The so’i mbatu was the official feast at which time the aspirant was bestowed a title ('uracha “share”); the stone product was blessed and also received a title. Only those who had sponsored such a feast received a portion of the butchered pig. It was also possible to have a stone monument carved for a deceased, and after it had been dedicated both the deceased and the stone carving made in his memory received titles. As for the stone objects, unlike Nias, the Batu Islanders did not make obelisks per se; but stone sculptures such as smooth-surface benches, elaborately carved thrones with anaglyphs depicting various natural and mythical animals and figures, crests, and symbolic figures, and pedestals with carvings of human feet abounded 5 . However, as in Nias, stone monuments set aplomb were unambiguously designated “stones for the living” (batu zauri), whereas horizontally placed stones were referred to as “stones for the dead” (batu zimate) 6 . Consistent with other features of their classificatory system (cf. Suzuki 1970), the vertically set stones, similar in form to menhirs, were designated male stones while the horizontally-laid stones, somewhat reminiscent of dolmens, were designated female stones. 3. Gold Feasts (fomboi ana a manafia) A second and more important step for obtaining status and rank was by having gold ornaments and jewelry made and dedicated. The gold feasts were open to women a nd men, nobles and commoners. However, the types of gold ornaments and jewelry that were prescribed were distinguished according to sex; besides this differentiation, there was a ceiling placed on the items that commoners could make and, therefore, the titles they could acquire.
