Riddles of the Ten’a Indians. 191 Riddle me: little dots seen far away in the distance. —• The return of migratory birds. In connection with yutira, which already means “at a distance”, the particle rozo emphasizes the meaning, as though it were: “in the dim distance”. The geese and ducks return in the spring, toward the end of April, and arc anxiously looked for, during the two preceeding weeks. When they are first sighted, they appear as small black dots on the sky. 15. Tla-dzor-karas’ana: rotlo ta keiletoti, kd te-keita .— Riddle-me: at-the-headwaters thc-bottoin has-bcen-cut, like it-is, Ans.: a) Tetsen kha; b) Tobd kaleluska. The-geese-feet (or foot-prints); the-swan’s foot-web. Riddle me: the bottom of the small stream looks as if it had been hacked with a knife. — The feet, or the footprints of the goose; or, the web on the swan’s feet. When a flock of geese wade in the shallow water, at the head of a small stream, they leave their footprints in the soft mud, and the edge of the web on their feet leaves a tiny curved impression such as might be cut with the point of a knife. Where many of these lines cross each other, the place re sembles a piece of soft wood on which something has been cut, and which still retains the knife-marks. The word kha means equally “foot” and “foot print”. The first answer seems more proper, because the geese are generally in large flocks, whereas the swans go few together. However, some of my Ten’a authorities consider keiletoti , in the question, as derived from the root tol, to trample, instead of tot , to cut, and then the question means: it looks as though something had been trampled, at the bottom of a small stream. The swan being heavier than the goose, answers better this question. But with this meaning, it becomes difficult to account for the kd te-keita, since the preceding verb is then used without any metaphor. 16. Tla-dzor-karas’ana: kdtl natty on, kd te-keita. —Ans.: Melilzena do; kedotdka do. Riddle me: it seems to have cultivated salmon-berries. — The bill of the emperor-goose. The emperor-goose (Philacte canagica) has its feet and beak of an orange-pink color, which is also that of the salmon-berry. The riddle assumes that cultivating these would communicate their color to the one handling them: this is an application of the principle of assimilation by contact 1 . The ex pression “it has cultivated salmon-berries”, is therefore equivalent to “it has taken the color of salmon-berries”. In the answer, the word kedotdka is proper, as the name of the emperor-goose; the mglilzena, or Canada goose, resembles it in size and color, except that its bill and feet are black. The use of one term for the other, is an instance of the laxity of speech of a great many natives. 17. Se-dzo-kes’ano: yunur dakon ye-zelaix. — Ans.: Toledoya kadla.
