Notes on the Lemba Tribe of the Northern Transvaal. 245 Notes on the Lemba Tribe of the Northern Transvaal. By Rev. A. A. Jaques. An account which summarised what was known at the time about the Lemba was published in 1908 (Folklore, Vol. XIX, No. 3) by H. A. Junod. The following is a record of some additional information I have been able to obtain since then 1 . The Lemba of the Transvaal still live mostly in the Zoutpansberg and Petersburg districts, but there is also a fair number around Potgietersrust and I have even discovered a few families as far afield as Magoboyi’s Location near Tzaneen. It is difficult to estimate the numbers of the tribe in the Trans vaal, though I think there are not more than a few hundred families altogether. One may therefore go a long way before finding a Lemba village, where two or three families usually live together in picturesque kraals built on the slope of a hill in the midst of boulders and bush. Although the Lemba seem to have succeeded in preserving their tribal individuality in the past, they aie now rapidly losing this and are being ab sorbed by the surrounding population. Their language is understood and used by a few old people only, the remainder having already abandoned it in favour of the speech of their neighbours, Venda, Sotho or Thonga. Physical characteristics. Some white residents hold that they can always recognise Lemba among other natives. This is a claim that would be difficult to substantiate. It is true that many Lemba have straight noses, rather fine features and an intelligent expression which distinguishes them from the ordinary run of natives, but on the other hand, very many of them are just like the other Bantu of this country, from among whom it would be difficult to pick them out. It is obvious that if they ever had physical features peculiar to themselves, they have largely lost them through inter marriage with other tribes, even though this is discountenanced among them. One does occassionally meet with Lemba who possess strikingly Semitic features. One of my informants, old Mosheh, even had what might be termed a typical Jewish nose, a rare occurrence among real Bantu. Clothing. The same old man desciibed to me the clothing worn by the Lemba in his youth, at the time of the invasions of the Ngoni chief Manukosi, somewhere about 1830-1835. The men wore a silovelo or mabenva a duiker-skin passed between the legs and tied around the loins. The woman ' The author wishes to express his thanks to Dr. N. J. v.
