Negritos of Eastern Luzon.
921
Combs bought from outsiders are used almost by everybody. Some small
Negrito girls, in the district of Casiguran, often ornamented their hair by
inserting flowers into it. One of them, Bendoling, was very fond of parting
her hair; but, in order to obtain this result, she had first to get it
thoroughly wet.
Ilongot men and women perforate their ears in two places: the top of the
pinna and the lobule. No such custom was observed among the Negritos of
Baler and Rizal, but in Cagayan and at Casiguran most of the women and
a few men pierced the lobules of their ears. In the district of Casiguran, the
hole in the lobule of the ear was sometimes very large, especially in the case
of the women, as it served them for a pouch: here they inserted their valuables,
usually rolled up in a piece of plaited bamboo, a kind of diminutive mat: coins,
needles, matches, tobacco, betel nuts, &c. (cf. Plates 8 and 9). The men generally

preferred to keep them in the folds of their T-string. Young girls, who rarely
possessed anything of value, used the holes in their ears for inserting flowers,
paper, strips of cloth, small sticks, &c.
The use of armlets on one or on both arms is very general among the
Negritos, especially among the men (cf. Plate 9); that of bracelets is less
frequent. Armlets mostly consist in strips of rattan, generally woven into
a narrow band; occasionally in strings of small beads, small ropes, &c.
Feathers, leaves, flowers, &c. are stuck into them for ornamental purposes.
Elaborate collars, made of pieces of shell and of small beads, are worn
by many women and young boys in the district of Casiguran (cf. Plate 11), but
nowhere else. These trinkets are similar in every particular to those worn by
the Ilongot (cf. Plate 4), and serve exactly the same purpose, namely:
adornment.
VI. Dwellings.
Negritos build their huts in whatever place it takes their fancy to do so.
In this paper, whenever I talk about Negrito settlements, I merely refer to
groups of huts that have been erected in a definite place, with the help and
under the supervision of Government officials; but these settlements are very
often abandoned without notice at the first opportunity.
The three types of houses which have been described in my former
reports, were found all over Luzon. They are: the wind shield (cf. Plate 13),
the low unwalled shed (cf. Plate 12), and the imitation Filipino house.
