PART III. Mourning Songs. Group I: Soso-Songs. The soso, sometimes called day-en di natey, is a very distinct kind of song, used only on the occasion of the death or burial of an adult person. Ex cept for the first two songs of this collection, which are used when the corpse is brought from the house to the burying ground, all the other ones are used indifferently at any period between the death and the burial. The singer or singers are ordinarily near relatives of the deceased. The tune of the snsd-songs is the most monotonous of all their songs, and, except for the dingaym, also the most drawling. The sflsd-songs very often begin with one or two words that have no meaning at all, but serve to introduce them: in this case they are mostly re peated before or after each strophe. There is an enormus variety of sosd-songs: the singer talks either in his own name or in that of the deceased, or of a spirit, or of death. He addresses either the deceased or a spirit or death or the relatives and assistants, A few sosd-songs consist in a dialogue between death and the deceased, the former trying to allure the latter, etc.; some are a rebuke or mockery at the expense of the deceased; but most of them consist of two parts: an expression of grief, followed by an invocation. In some instances the snsd-songs are mere narra tives, without any reference to death or mourning; it also happens that they consist in a mere succession of verses with the same rhyme and very little con nection, if any.
