The study of the historical evolution of the Tamil * 1 2 3 4 5 language would become possible only if by way of preliminary work the linguistic peculiarities of every extant old document are carefully listed and classified, The earliest Tamil documents that supply useful data to the student of Tamil Linguistics 1 The symbols that 1 have used in this essay for transliterating Tamil sounds do not generally call for comment, except the following: — 1. m is a slightly centralised u-sound without lip-rounding, occurring in certain final positions; I have, for convenience sake used only u to represent this sound, except where attention has to be drawn to its particular value. 2. Though c is evaluated in many parts of the Tamil country today as é, the ori ginal value of the sound appears to have been that of an affricate; so I have employed the symbol c. 3. V and d' are alveolar plosives. 4. z is the peculiar palato-cerebral voiced continuative of Tamil. 5. A is the blade dental nasal of Malayálam. The actual sound-value of dental A in Tamil is observable in modern pronunciation only in the consonant group ád; so, I have used only the symbol n for both A and n of Tamil. In literary Tamil, the blade-dental A appears as a short sound in initial positions; medially in the group Ad; and in two old words poruA and veriA as a short final. The point-nasal alveolar n is always non-initial: it occurs as a short sound in final positions; and as a short or a long sound or as a member of consonant groups (like rid', &c.), in medial positions. The term “aorist” used by me in this essay is to be understood in its literal sense: “what is undefined” or “indeterminate”. My use of the term “infinitive participle” for the morphological type VIII is based on the syntactic functions of this type in Tamil. Anthropos XXXIII. 1938. XI. Optatives. XII.
