2 Zeitschrift für Ethnologie 130 (2005) Re-Visioning Reality through Theoretical Refocussing Contrary to many commentators, the post-modern condition seems to be more than a fad, in reality as much as in the perception about it, and real insofar, as there is no other reality for the social scientists than the perceived one, even if these perceptions may differ from the view-point and the position of one observer to the next. All scholars in the social and cultural sciences — at least those working with explicitly interpretative frameworks — are aware of the fact that the diverse so-called “turns” in the theoretical orientation implicate a very different way of looking at reality, if we only consider currently competing orientation of the major "fads" of theory from the linguistic to the performative and, most recently, the iconic turn. These "turns" are only a shorthand for the shift of attention which extends beyond disciplinary boundaries, at least in the humanities and social sciences. The widespread acceptance of such terms is also an indication that it is more than a fashionable fad, in fact a serious re-orientation for perceiving and describing the world, for which in more scientific terminology the notion of “paradigm-shift” was once employed. Anthropo- logists are possibly even more aware as well as concerned about these shifts, as they are traditionally already tuned to the diversity of reality-perceptions of those collectivities, social as well as linguistic, which they are investigating. The additional problem raised by the seemingly ever-faster change of “paradigms” adduced by the post-modern discourse, certainly brought about a new awareness about the epistemological conundrum of how to cope with the double shift of perception, i.e. how the own scholarly shift of paradigm frame influences the multiplicity of perceived realities of others and what the result for a comparative science of culture may be. In this sense I am using the term “transfiguration”, not in its more religious conno- tation ofa transubstantiation, transformation or metamorphosis (see Koepping 2002). What seems to happen is rather a re-assembling of parts of the discourse, its objectives and methods, like a putting together of the "figures" of a puzzle in different ways. It would probably be more appropriate to speak of a re-configuration or a re-orienting of the focus of envisioning as well as depicting Otherness (and by implication also of Self, understood individually as well as collectively). Whether such re-configurations, as they now occur through the inclusion of and response to what is loosely called the post-modern condition by artistic, literary and scholarly commentaries, can be seen as true transformations must remain an open question.
