Miscellanea 295 Tongan images was conducted by the late Sir Peter Buck. In addition there is in the British Museum a wooden image from Western Samoa. It is the only known sample from the Samoan group, and Tongan rather than Fijian in type. As to the material used, wood is more frequent in Fiji and ivory in Tonga. There is a misconception that human figures do not occur in Fiji. (Man [London] 56. 1956. 192. With 2 pi.) An Otago Coastal Occupation Site with Dinornis Remains (G. Blake-Palmer). — In 1955, high tides and wave action uncovered evidence of an occupation site between Brinns Point and Ross Point (Otago, South Island, New Zealand). The site gives proof of the association of stone artefacts with the pelvic remains of one of the larger moas identified as dinornis ? dinornis robustus (Owen). Furthermore, a tibia of emeus crassus was discovered from beneath fire-marked stones within less than two feet of the hori zontal position of the dinornis pelvis. The stone artefacts are a blade and a (broken) nephrite drill. The former, struck from the outer core of a chalcedony pebble, was found in situ only a few inches from the pelvis and on approximately the same level. The nephrite drill was found in debris washed down presumably by wave action some thirteen feet away from the pelvis remains. (The Journal of the Polynesian Soc. [Wellington] 65. 1956. pp. 161-163. With 3 pi.) Australian Fish Hooks and their Distribution (A. Massola). — Whilst the absence of fish hooks in inland Australia may be due to the environment, the tribes inhabiting the coasts of western and southern Australia were simply unacquainted with this kind of implement. The natives of coastal South Australia and Victoria, with parts of coastal New South Wales and the Lower Murray River at one time used the so-called muduk, a piece of bone, circular in cross section, and pointed at each end. Muduks are of world wide distribution. The Tasmanians had neither hooks nor muduks. The people of coastal New South Wales and southern Queensland used a crescentic type of fish hook at the time of the first contacts. It could have been imported from Melanesia. It is very similar to a Tahiti form. The Northern Territory and Northern Queensland natives used a composite hook which may have been an early importation from New Guinea. In turn it was being displaced in the Gulf of Carpentaria by the “Bent Pin” type of turtle shell hook from the Torres Straits and the iron nail hook from Indonesia. An isolated type, probably evolved locally from the composite hook, was used by the Daly River natives. Those of Cape Grafton also made a hook from the shell of a fresh water mussel. (Mem. nat. Mus. Viet. [Melbourne] 22. 1956. P. 1. 16 pp. in 8°, ill.) Victorian Aboriginal Strangling Cords (A. Massola). — The Pointing Bone, an instrument of magic, which plays such an important part in the death beliefs of the abo rigines of Central Australia, has its counterpart in northwest and central Victoria in the form known to Europeans as a “strangling cord”. It consists of a pointed bone, generally made from the fibula of a dead man or of a kangaroo, to the blunt end of which is attached a twisted cord of kangaroo sinew or of vegetable matter. The end of this cord is fashioned into a loop through which the bone is passed, thus forming a lariat. The mode of using this instrument also differs from the Central Australian way. According to A. W. Howitt, the Mukjarawaint tribe used it by swinging it around by the cord and then throwing it in the direction of the intended victim. Amongst other tribes actual contact was made with the victim. — In collections, strangling cords are very rare. (Mem. nat. Mus. Viet. [Melbourne] 22. 1956. P. 3. 4 pp. in 8°. With 2 pi.)
