Cultural Idiom as an Ecologie Factor: Two Studies 457 Conclusion In the final analysis, it can be surmised that in tribal societies occupying ari d and semi-arid regions, similar environmental conditions and pressures Present certain opportunities and limitations to which a homeostatic reaction, involving the cultural idiom of kinship mechanics, facilitates different expres sions of adaptibility without disrupting the characteristic pattern in the social structure. This cultural idiom functions at all levels of social organization, Within which all other factors that operate to maintain an equilibrium in the cultural ecosystem are different aspects of the mechanism in ecological adap tation. Such properties are not merely functional, but they do, in fact, favor efficient adaptive behavior within the culture-environment system. Appendix: A Note on Walbiri Subsection System The Walbiri, like the Aranda, possess an eight subsection (or class) system. Hadcliffe-Brown (1930: 39) upholds that the subsections are, in effect, bisections of the four Kariera-type sections. While Dumont (1966: 240-243), ° n the other hand, argues that, in fact, the Kariera have only two sections (ffiur alternate generation groups), and consequently, the Aranda have only t°ur (eight generation-alternating groups). The latter’s examination reveals ffiut two Aranda complementary subsections are manifestations of two gene rational levels of the same section, what is basically in agreement with adcliffe-Brown’s view. Such subsections marry other subsections in cor- re sponding generations, but of different section memberships. Hence, it appears Dumont that this system regulates intermarriages which permit the joining all subsections, since the sections articulate preferential exchanges of person- ^ (affines) in a scheme resembling a symmetrical, closed chain linkage. My ° w n examination of the Walbiri exchanges of women confirms this arrange- ^ ent - Diagrams 2 and 3 present the flow of marriageable individuals among the la nda and the Walbiri, respectively. While Diagram 4 shows the subsection 'Affiliations of the offsprings among the latter. A very important facet of Walbiri subsection interrelations is the fre cently ignored fact which points out to a patriline basis as an ideal form of Secti °n membership inheritance (cf. Diagram 4), if the preferred rule of mar- ria ge is observed, irrespective of the matrilinea! point of reference. Thus, if A t lorries d x (preferred marital alliance), their offsprings will belong to the her ’s section, but of a different alternate generation level, i.e.,in the sub- action A 2 (or a 2 , if females). In prescribed marital unions, the mother is °ffiy a point of reference in affiliating the children with the appropriate section !
